Who is Jesus? Build the Story Jesus Teaches From The Mountain

5th Sunday after the Epiphany Children’s Chapel Lesson Plan

*Note: For the four Sundays after Jesus’ Baptism, we invite the children to help “build” a particular story from Scripture.  These stories help reveal who Jesus is, and we call them “Epiphanies.”

  • Go around the circle and share your name and the name of your favorite teacher. (Everyone responds “Good Morning, ______!”)

  • Written on a poster board so the kids can read (or sing) along.

I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus.

God set the stars to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus.

In him there is no darkness at all. The night and the day are both alike. The Lamb is the light of the city of God.

Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.(Hymnal 1982 pg. 490)

(Ask for individual prayers of concern or thanksgiving/celebration)

We offer these prayers through Jesus, the light of the world. Amen

  • Today we are going to work together to build something— a story about Jesus!  We will each work on a different part or element of the story.  At the end of our time, we will gather to read the story and reflect on what it reveals to us about Jesus. Have children help decide which part of the story they will build.

  • Have one child or two children choose one or more Beatitude Card(s).

The source for this wonderful collection of Beatitudes Cards is here:

Create a table full of art materials (like the junk box idea) and assign one or two children to each of the cards.  They can create a simple sculpture or artistic representation for that particular Beatitude(s).

  • Story: “The Beatitudes” Spark Story Bible pg. 264. Read the first two paragraphs from the Story Bible then read the “Beatitude Cards" for Jesus’ teachings. Have one child portray Jesus teaching up on the mountain (maybe sit on a higher place in the room) and then have the children present their art creation for each of the Beatitude Cards. If time permits, here are some wondering questions:

    • I wonder how blessings from God feel?

    • I wonder if Jesus surprised anyone with his teaching?

    • I wonder which blessing is your favorite?

  • Sing “Go Now in Peace
